'Young audiences flocking out of Spymonkey’s gothic spoof can be heard using, amid the obvious descriptions such as “brilliant” and “hilarious”, equally appreciative terms: “crazy”, “bonkers”, “random”, “sooo mental!” Wrong. Hilarious it certainly is, shriekingly and helplessly so at times, but what this quartet do is as precise as a Swiss watch. Under the direction of Cal McCrystal, who directed the physical comedy elements of One Man Two Guvnors, it is crafted to the second. To look as “random” as this takes every ounce of the nerve and skill these performers have gleaned over 15 years together. Every joke, move, pratfall and unexpected insanity is planned and consummately executed.
